SUNRISE MOVEMENT HAMILTON COLLEGE
Jobs and Justice on the Hill
Bringing the Green New Deal to Hamilton
Started in the fall semester of 2019, Sunrise Hamilton is a movement to stop climate change and create millions of good jobs in the process. We are a chapter, or "hub", of the national Sunrise Movement, we are committed to climate justice for all members of society and prioritizing those in frontline communities. It is our job to build people power, which will translate to political power. The climate crisis demands nonviolent, collective direct action, active civil disobedience, and mass noncooperation; we refuse to participate in our own extinction. For the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the places we call home: we fight.
Sunrise Hamilton is dedicated to creating change both on and off campus. Our community includes the students, faculty, and staff of Hamilton College, but it also includes the sovereign Oneida Nation whose land we sit on, the village of Clinton, and the people of the greater-Utica area. We stand in solidarity with other movements for justice, near and far. That's why our work has a heavy focus on coalition-building and intersectionality.
As an educational institution primarily for the benefit of young people, Hamilton College has an obligation to walk the walk. Sunrise Hamilton is dedicated to pushing Hamilton College's administration and Board of Trustees to align its mission and actions by divesting the endowment from fossil fuels, committing to 100% campus carbon neutrality by 2030, working with the Oneida Nation to be good stewards of the land, and bringing climate justice into the curriculum.
It is long past due for Central New York to have a Green New Deal. We are fighting for Congressman Brindisi to throw his weight behind the most progressive climate legislation in the country. We are building people power both on and off campus to pressure the City of Utica and Oneida County to enact their own versions of the Green New Deal. Working with partners across the state, we are also committed to making the State of New York a climate justice leader for the rest of the nation to follow.
